THE MASK AND THE TEXT

A particular perspective on Commedia dell’Arte with its handcrafts, performers and dissemination. These presentations aim to discuss the dichotomy text vs. body and to consider the mask as the bridge uniting this duality; the body with the text.

30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE OF LEATHER MASK MAKING AND THE USE OF STEFANO PEROCCO’S MASKS IN ITALY

Practical demonstrations done by Claudio de Maglio and Marco Sgrosso, who will as well share their personal experience and use of the mask in their own practice. Marco Sgrosso presents his work on Shakespeare with masks and Claudio de Maglio will describe one of his production using masks for Brecht.

KALEVALA DELL’ARTE: PERFORMING THE INVISIBLE BRIDGES

The lecture will analyze the performance Kalevala dell’arte which blended the Italian theatrical style, Commedia dell’Arte with the Finnish epos, Kalevala. The lecture will include a practical demonstration done by Johanna MacDonald.

PROJECTION OF THE DOCUMENTARY: Un Soleil à Kaboul….ou Plutôt Deux.

In June 2005, Ariane Mnouchkine and the Théâtre du Soleil were invited to teach in Kabul, Afghanistan. With the help of Balinese, Japanese and Commedia Dell'arte masks, she and her troupe have been able to break down cultural and religious barriers. Through theatre, the men and women of her company have boldly expressed their passions, fears and loves. While following the creative interactions between the Afghan actors and the Théâtre du Soleil, this film examines the psyche of a people traumatized by three decades of war. In French with English subtitles.

Kesäkuussa 2005 Ariane Mnouchkine ja Théâtre du Soleil kutsuttiin opettamaan Afganistaniin, jossa teatteriryhmä pystyi balilaisten, japanilaisten ja commedia dell’arten naamioiden avulla rikkomaan kulttuurisia ja uskonnollisia rajoja.
