MetaWORKSHOP:
EXPRESSIVE MASK (24h)
29.3.–1.4.2024
KEY WORDS
Basics of physical theatre, bodily role building, non-verbal storytelling, expressive masks/ Poppius masks
TO WHOM
For performing arts professionals, students or long-time amateurs.
No previous mask experience is required. The course can be considered an inspiration for future mask theater fun, or masks can be treated purely as a pedagogical work tool that supports the bodily and spatial storytelling abilities of performers, directors and teachers.
DESCRIPTION
During the Easter vacation, the physical theater course introduces the basics of wordless mask theater with expressive full masks. Exercises originating from Lecoq pedagogy give participants movement articulation skills and strengthen skills in bodily and spatial expression.
The course uses full face masks designed by the Finnish mask manufacturer pioneer Antero Poppius. The design language of each mask suggests a unique and exaggerated way of approaching role-building. With expressive masks, we also dive into human emotions and stories by making the invisible (emotions, tensions and intentions) visible and by embodying the internal movements of the character.
TEACHER
Soile Mäkelä is a freelance physical theater artist and theater teacher (MA), and one of the founding members of Teatteri Metamorfoosi.
Soile got to know Poppius' masks for the first time in 1996, during Elina Rainio's classes at Stadia (later Metropoilia). The initial love for masks has not faded during 28 years, but deepened and served as a red thread in Mäkelä's study and work career.
