DESCRIPTION
This mask theatre weekend will be full of grotesque beauty, including all gender identities. Expressive whole masks will take us to the wordless world of expression. We will learn basic mask theatre techniques in order to make the mask character alive and credible. In addition to the transformation in the body structure and movement quality, suggested by the shape of the mask, the participants will design and construct the nude costume for their mask characters.
The masks are designed by Finnish mask maker Antero Poppius (1922-2005) and made by Teatteri Metamorfoosi/ Johanna Kultala.
TEACHER
Soile Mäkelä (MA) is a founder member of Teatteri Metamorfoosi, a physical theatre company based in Helsinki. Soile is a theater teacher who graduated from Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2008. She is approaching theater making from the physical point of view and her teaching is highly influenced by the pedagogy of Jacque Lecoq. Mäkelä has been teaching theater with various masks for twenty years. She got to know Poppius masks for the first time in 1996 and she is still on that path.
